What causes a Notebook to turn on and off slowly? I have no problem other than this. It seems to be working okay, however in the last three months takes anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes to turn on or off. Is there anything i can do to speed up the process?:monsters-

Try installing some good window registry cleaner, spyware scanner software.

The problem might be some hidden background process causing it. Usually the software would solve most problem.
Slow startup and shutdown could also be a signal for hardware upgrade.. but if your laptop is new or within 18mths old, try finding a local guru or tech guy to help you with it as something could be wrong.

Most window registry cleaner software with trial version are bogus... they will allow you to install and run the scan showing you how many hundreds of problem your laptop has.. but it wont fix it until you buy it. So dont bother installing any if you dont intend to buy it.. or you could seach for some *Ahem* stuff to peel it than use for free ;)

I'm having the same problem with my desktop computer. Takes 5 minutes to startup. Then runs fine. Just started happening last few days.
What product did Best Buy have--any good?

For once they didn't try to sell me anything. I told them i had Computer Associates virus and spyware software on the computer and they said it was one of the best and just scan it when i get home. Did that and still running slowly. They said the only other problem could be the hard drive or a hardware problem.Checking my other options. i bought a new notebook last week but i want one for the office and one at home.:smoker2:

Appreciate the info. Tried it, however didn't do any good, however it couldn't have hurt and probably got rid of a lot of stuff i don't use.

Problem with registry cleaners (UNLESS you know exactly what you are removing can really mess you up.) On my previous computer with Windows 98, I bought one on line and it cleaned my registry all right. So messed up I had to carry my computer into a repair shop and they did a TOTAL reformat. I lost all my old stuff; cost me $50 and that was almost 3 years ago!

I do notice my computer has selective startup instead of Normal startup which I think Verizon technicians changed on the phone when I switched from dial up to broadband, dsl. But has been fine for a long time, so I'm scared to try Normal startup--too many boxes on the selective menu checked.

It looks like you are as inquisative about your machine as i am.My wife keeps telling me i need to take a computer class. I'm a very analytical person and want to know how it work's so i don't have to ask so damn many questions.Wish they had a mod down here, i would pay for somanswers. My wife has problems with attachments and it cost me a ton to get the right answers in order to send some attached emailsd1g1t

Well--I'm one that likes to know "why" something happened. If I know that, I'm not real likely to repeat the event, if I can help it.
If I wasn't so old, might enjoy a computer class. But have an idea, the type of class I'm looking for would be something that could be learned in a book. But my patience level is sorta low. And if the problem was VERY simple, the US makers of these computers would not be handling all the fix-ups in foreign countries. They don't want it simple, they want old folks to PAY for repairs. In the meantime they outsource to places outside the US, where the company won't be bothered.
When they say...."sir"...about 4 times in 2 sentences and that's one of the main words I can understand; UHH--OHHH!

Just click on the red dot that you see on your screen.

What "do you mean there are 2 red dots"?
